E-Learning – The Perfect Time to Catch Up

E-Learning - The Perfect Time to Catch Up, e-learning, lms, online, management, system, A-lurna, urm training, training, online training training coronavirus, covid-19, social disancing

Due to the unprecedented impact of Covid-19 on many different types of organisations, large numbers of people will be working from home, possibly for the first time ever. In the short term, there may be plenty to do as we all try and complete projects and conduct meetings that were scheduled in our diaries. But what happens after that? Working remotely, whilst straightforward in concept, just isn’t that easy in reality.

Some organisations will already have eLearning platforms in place to enable staff to receive regular training in a variety of subjects. These subjects will vary from one organisation to the next, and reflect what is core to that business, but most will have links to information security, e.g. privacy and confidentiality, acceptable use and mobile working.

For a lot of organisations and individuals, the prospect of their typical office work drying up presents a rare opportunity and an increase in a precious commodity that may not normally be available. That commodity, of course, is time. And how can that time be used effectively and sensibly? – Catching up on the ‘must get around to’ items including training; either completing courses that have been started and not finished or taking the time to sit new training courses and taking on board key messages.

What’s more, it is also the perfect opportunity for information security and training managers to review and refresh any staff training material that is currently in use. At URM, we often see organisations presenting the same core training material year after year.  Why? Quite simply, there isn’t the time or opportunity to update it and, in many areas, the core messages are likely to still be relevant.  However, that’s not to say that alternative or additional information would not be welcome, particularly if there have been changes in working practices such as the increased use of cloud computing or changes to external influences such as legislation (e.g. GDPR).

Another aspect we tend to see is that the testing element of any training (the quiz at the end) never or rarely changes, i.e. organisations ask the same questions repeatedly instead of varying the questions each time the material is presented. This is an opportunity to review and refresh those questions.

With this in mind, here are a few recommendations for organisations and their staff to be doing whilst they are working from home:

STAFF

Catch up on eLearning

Learn more detail about the subjects covered using the Internet, e.g. YouTube

Consider writing or suggesting updates to some of the training material (it’s a great way to learn, as you’ll need to do the research)

Information Security / Training Managers

Refresh eLearning material (make sure it covers current issues that affect the business)

Create new, tailored training that is more relevant to specific roles

Write additional questions to be used for testing knowledge and understanding

Some of the items listed above probably represent things we would like to get done, but just don’t have the time to during our busy working lives but, as we said before, we now have the time and the opportunity to get them done.

If you would like help with any of these items, URM has training and eLearning material available, or we can help you quickly develop training material and deliver it to your teams and staff to make the most of this unusually available and precious commodity – time.
